Monday afternoon we were back to rehearsing. Carlos entertained himself about town during that time and then we all met back at Sammy's to go to the drag pageant at Play. It was terrific fun. There were queens everywhere!
I never really thought about this, but bathrooms are confusing places at drag shows. Is a ladies' room just for biological ladies? Is "ladies" even a biological term? Seems to be more of a mindset or an earned title than something determined by genitals. In my limited knowledge of queer studies, sex and gender are separate. Parts have nothing to do with gender, which begs the question, why are bathrooms divided only into men and women when a growing number of people identify across biological and gendered lines? It's an issue on which an entire doctoral thesis can (and probably has) been written. I am not equipped to speak about it with much authority, but it is something to think about. I am confident though, that even if a gender neutral restroom did exist at Play, the "ladies'" room at the drag show would still be over run with queens. It's more fun that way anyway: drag queens give good hair tips.
I never thought it would happen, but I actually got sparkled out. Too many sparkles, too much glitter, too much lip syncing. Carlos and I left before seeing who won the pageant. It was a fantastic way to spend the evening, but we just couldn't take it any more. And may I just say, he is an excellent sport. It may not have been his first choice for entertainment, but he went along with it and then got kindof into it. I loved watching his face when a queen would do a crazy move. I mean, it was impressive, but it was more fun to watch him be impressed.
